The Architecture of La Grande Motte: A Blend of Modernity and Green Spaces
La Grande Motte La Grande Motte is renowned for its aesthetic appeal and its elegant, minimalist style. Born from the imagination of architect-philosopher Jean Balladur, was founded in the 1960s to revitalize the Languedoc coast. Its architecture evokes both the pre-Columbian pyramids of Teotihuacan in Mexico and the interplay between Yin and Yang. After thirty years of tireless work, Jean Balladur succeeded in realizing his vision: to make La Grande Motte a sustainable city where architecture serves people. In 2010, the city was awarded the “20th-Century Heritage” designation by the Ministry of Culture.
La Grande-Motte: A Garden City
La Grande Motte is a small town in terms of area, covering less than 12 km²… Of which 8 km² are green spaces and natural areas! That’s exceptional!
Tens of thousands of trees have been planted to eventually form a canopy designed to soothe the soul and provide shade for pedestrians and cyclists who come to enjoy the town in the summer. An aerial view of La Grande Motte reveals that ponds, dunes, woods, groves, and thousands of pine trees cover 70% of the urban area. It is thus the first “green resort” in Europe to have received “3 Flowers” from the “Ville Fleurie” label, which recognizes the municipality’s efforts regarding its landscape and plant heritage as well as its commitment to sustainable development initiatives.
In 2025, the city received the Gold Award from the Green Destination label, recognized by the highest authority in tourism, which honors regions based on their alignment with 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Between theCamargue, and the Mediterranean
La Grande Motte lies its jewel: the PetiteCamargue, crisscrossed by canals—one of Europe’s most beautiful natural areas, where Camargue horses and bulls roam freely, and nearly 150 bird species, including the iconic pink flamingo, nest.
This exceptional natural region was awarded the “Grand Site de France” designation in 2014.
