Architecture
Born from the imagination of architect-philosopher Jean Balladur, La Grande Motte took shape in the late 1960s. It would become his life’s work and every architect’s dream: building the ideal city from a blank slate.
Its architecture evokes both the pre-Columbian pyramids of Teotihuacan in Mexico and the interplay between Yin and Yang. After thirty years of tireless work, Jean Balladur succeeded in realizing his vision: to make La Grande Motte a sustainable city where architecture serves humanity. In 2010, the city was awarded the “20th-Century Heritage” designation by the Ministry of Culture.
A garden city
La Grande Motte is a small town in terms of area, covering less than 12 km²... Of which 8 km² consists of green spaces and natural areas! That’s exceptional!
Tens of thousands of trees have been planted to eventually form a canopy designed to soothe the soul and provide shade for pedestrians and cyclists who come to enjoy the town in the summer. Dozens of kilometers of flowering, fragrant hedges have been planted to line the roads and create vast, peaceful public spaces for strolling.
An aerial view of La Grande Motte shows that ponds, dunes, woods, groves, and thousands of pine trees cover 70% of the urban area. It is thus the first “green resort” in Europe to have received “3 Flowers” from the “Ville Fleurie” label, which recognizes the municipality’s efforts regarding its landscape and plant heritage as well as its commitment to sustainable development initiatives.
The Petite Camargue
La Grande Motte is set within the Petite Camargue, crisscrossed by canals—one of Europe’s most beautiful natural areas, where Camargue horses and bulls roam freely and nearly 150 species of birds nest, including the iconic pink flamingo.
This exceptional natural region was awarded the “Grand Site de France” designation in 2014.
